Introduction


Hibiscus is a lucrative and adaptable crop whose vividly coloured, star-shaped blossoms are coveted for their tart flavour and may be converted into a variety of by-products. Hibiscus jellies, jams, fruit pastes, traditional remedies, teas, syrups, and soothing beverages may be found at practically every West African market. These lovely flowers are abundant in vitamin C and have been shown in studies to treat high blood pressure. 

Hibiscus flowers come in a variety of colours. There are around 200 species of hibiscus, each with its type of bloom. Hibiscus blooms are surrounded by alternating, oblong to lanceolate leaves with a toothed or lobed edge. 

The flowers are huge, showy, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, ranging in colour from white to pink, red, orange, purple, or yellow, and measuring 4–18 cm in width. Flower colour in certain species, such as Helianthus mutabilis and Helianthus tiliaceus, varies with age. At maturity, the fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule with numerous seeds in each lobe that are discharged when the capsule dehisces (splits open). It is red and white. 

Hibiscus flower blooms almost all year in Nigeria, with peak output being from November to April of the following year. 

The dried hibiscus flower is used to make hibiscus tea (Zobo). Hibiscus tea is a caffeine-free herbal tea made from the Roselle hibiscus, scientifically known as Hibiscus sabdarrifa. The tea is manufactured specifically from the dried fruit section of the Roselle plant known as calyx. It has a crimson tint and a berry flavour. 

Hibiscus, with its distinctive dark crimson petals and moderate smell, is arguably best recognised as a decorative flower. Furthermore, the tropical plant is famous for its therapeutic capabilities, which have lately experienced a rise in demand globally. A powerful extract produced from the flower may be used to make a tart-tasting tea with antioxidant characteristics that may help to maintain excellent health. 

The flower Hibiscus Sabadariffa is used to make Zobo drink, which is extracted using hot water. The extracted drink is subsequently produced by the addition of preservatives and other nutritionally valuable components. The drink is valuable for its nutritional and therapeutic properties. Roselle Calyces, the raw material, is found in commercial amounts, particularly in northern Nigeria. 

Consumption of Zobo has acquired widespread appeal throughout Nigeria, owing in part to its speculated antihypertensive effects; nevertheless, the short shelf life of the drink manufactured using the conventional method has severely limited its universal acceptability and consumption in Nigeria.
