An Assessment Of The Link Between Renewable Energy And Goal 7 Of Sustainable Development Goals In Kenya. Case Study Of Kikuyu Constituency In Kiambu County

Abstract:

This study focuses on the assessment of the link between renewable energy and goal 7 of Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya, a case study of Kikuyu constituency in Kiambu County. Though the renewable energy sector is not relatively new, its growth in Kenya is at a low pace as compared to the other developing countries. Despite the huge potential of renewable energy especially biogas in Kenya, most renewable energy especially biogas systems technology market penetration is notably low and the existence of these technologies is rarely known by potential users. Therefore, this study sought to identify and analyze factors influencing biogas energy adoption and utilization in Kikuyu constituency, to establish how biogas energy production and use in Kikuyu constituency has influenced household energy supply and investigate the determinants of adoption of solar and biogas. The study used both primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected through observation, structured personal interviews with household heads and key informants, and focus group discussions. Secondary data was collected through desktop research and a review of relevant literature from the internet and publications. The study recommended that the government and other stakeholders should create awareness and sensitize the learned people regarding the benefits of adopting renewable energy so as to increase the adoption of solar energy among educated people. Further, the government should create incentives to encourage Kenyans to adopt biogas by sensitizing them on the importance of biogas a source of renewable energy
