ABSTRACT

Organisations are concerned with what should be done to achieve sustained high level of performance through people and the construction industry is no exception. This calls for management to find ways by which workers will be motivated for high productivity. The purpose for this study was to assess the role of management in motivating construction labour for high productivity in the Kasena Nankana West District. Four vibrant construction sites being operated by four different construction firms were purposely sampled. The study was descriptive in nature and employed questionnaire as the main data collection tool, however study also made use of interviews as a means to soliciting the views of management of the construction firms. The study also made use of observation. Descriptive statistical methods such as frequency tables and pie chart were used in the data analysis by employing SPSS. The findings of the study points out that the management of construction firms in the study area have no deliberate motivation policy but have adopted some motivational strategies such as recognition and fair wages as ways of motivating construction workers. However, it was obvious that these strategies adopted by management of the construction firms have not yielded much with regards to motivating workers for high productivity. The study therefore recommend a deliberation action on the part of management of construction firms to institute a deliberate and a well packaged motivational policy to help boost productivity. Management should also work assiduously to improve work environment by providing protective clothing for workers. Subsidised canteen services and enhance wages are also recommended. It is also recommended that future studies focus on the role of monetary incentives in motivating construction workers. It is further recommended that future studies examine the impact of work environment on productivity of construction workers.
