Crop Growing And Economic Welfare: A Case Study Of Katikamu Sub-County Luwero District.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the effect of crop growing on the economic welfare a case study of

Katikamu sub county Luwero district.. The objectives of the study were; to establish the

level of economic welfare, to determine the level of crop growing and to establish the

relationship between crop growing and economic welfare in Katikamu sub county

Luwero district. In this study, a stratified random sampling technique was used and a

self-administered questionnaire was adopted during data collection. The sample size of

the study was established using Yamane’s formula (1967) and it took 80 respondents

where 18 were female and 62 were male farmers. Data was analyzed using the SPSS

statistical package.

The research found out that crop growing showed an improvement in economic welfare

of the farmers but the statement of the hypothesis in the study was accepted thus

there is no significant relationship between crop growing and economic welfare shown

by the significance value (0.580) which is greater than the level of significance (0.05)

thus accepting the Null hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between crop

growing and economic welfare. This means that economic welfare among the people of

Katikamu sub county is not only caused by crop growing only but also other factors like

employments, businesses, formal sector among others could have been instrumental in

promoting economic welfare in Katikamu sub county Luwero district. The researcher

recommends that farmers should participate in commercial agriculture, animal rearing

and poultry, participating in other economic activities such as retailing and female

farmers should engage themselves in crop growing to reduce gender inequality in the agriculture sector.
