Abstract
Poor market sanitation is a serious problem that has contributed to the spread of infectious diseases and environmental degradation in Nigeria. The study evaluated the level of awareness and practice of solid waste management and problem of waste disposal and managementin Effurun market, a leading food stuff market in Uvwie LGA of Delta state. It reviewed some of the formal and informal waste management programmes implemented in the time past and what led to their failure while examining the current state of environmental sanitation at the market. The evaluation process involved both internal and external observation with a checklist adapted from the policy guidelines on market sanitation by the Federal Ministry of Environment as well as questionnaires which were administered to randomly selected market users. The evaluation revealed that the practice of solid waste management within the market is very poor while the marketers practiced open dumping method of unsegregated waste disposal which is insanitary. Some set of respondents reached rated the performance of those responsible for collection and disposal of refuse as very poor. They also showed a great level of awareness on the hazard associated improper waste management. It is therefore recommended that The Environmental Health Authority should initiate a program of waste handling and collection that prohibits indiscriminate dumping and littering of wastes as well as waste separation by education as well as provision colour coded waste bins at strategic locations within the market waste segregation and ensuring that they are disposed regularly.
