The Use of Ionizing Radiation from 60co Gamma Source in Controlling Moldiness in Dried Cocoa Beans

ABSTRACT Mouldiness in stored cocoa beans in Ghana and the production of aflatoxin have been studied. Based on actual weight of discarded beans, mouldy beans have been estimated to constitute 0.13 % and 0.00002 % of marketable beans at the farm ers’ level and the buying agents’ depots respectively in the Tafo District. This is contrasted with an estimated value o f 0.16 % obtained in a questionnaire type study involving farmers. Estimated mouldy beans at the Tema port was 0.69 % per year...

Growth of Cocoa Seedlings as Affected by Different Growth Media and Different Polybag Sizes

ABSTRACT A study was conducted to determine the effects of different growth media and different poly bag sizes on the growth of cocoa seedlings in the nursery. The experimental design was split plot design with three replicates. The treatments were soil (S), carbonated rice husk (CRH), cocoa pod husk (CPH), cocopeat (CP) , sawdust (SD), S+CRH, S+CPH, S+CP, S+SD, CRH+CPH, CRH+CP, CRH+SD, CPH+CP, CPH+SD, CP+SD and the three polytene bag sizes were 12.5 cm x 18.5 cm (small), 10.0 cm x 35.0 cm ...

Assessment of Variability in Fruit Quality Characteristics and Levels of Some Bioactive Compounds in African Eggplant (Solanum Aethiopicum L.) Germplasm in Ghana

ABSTRACT  In order to determine genetic variability in some accessions of Africa eggplant, open field experiments were conducted in two separate locations, one at University of Ghana farm, Legon and the other at the Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC), OkumaningKade simultaneously. The experimental design used was the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The combined analysis of variance was carried out for the data gathered. The effect of...

YIELD AND POST-HARVEST QUALITIES OF CUCUMBER AS INFLUENCED BY COMPANION PLANTING

ABSTRACT The popularity of cucumber has been on the increase over the years due to its nutritional and economic benefits. A field experiment was conducted at Teaching and Research Farm, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, (Longitude 708070N, latitude 504960E) to evaluate the influence of companion plants on the yield and post-harvest quality of cucumber. The hybrid cucumber seeds were bought from Agro-dealers in Akure. The companion crops which include sunflower, mint and marigold seedlings were ob...
