ABSTRACT Working properties of some clay deposits in Ekiti State, Nigeria were investigated with a view to determine their suitability for use as refractory bricks. The samples were collected from three different commercial pottery clay centers in Ekiti State; they are Ara, Awo and Isan. Two varieties were collected from both Ara and Isan, which are named Ara 1, Ara 2, and Isan 1, Isan 2 respectively while only one type was collected from Awo. The clay samples were crushed, pulverized, sieve...
ABSTRACT This study reports an investigation of the effect of carburizing variables - temperature, time and percentage of energizer --on the case properties of C2R steel obtained from HMT Ltd. India. A carburizer consisting of hardwood charcoal and coke respectively in the ratio of 2: 1 was used for the research with sodium carbonate as the energizer. The carburizing box was filled with 20 mm thick carburizer compound prior to fixing the steel samples in place. The specimens were carburized ...
ABSTRACT The dissolution response of y phase to thermal and mechanical effects in an inertia friction welded turbine disk nickel base super alloy RR1000 has been investigated.
ABSTRACT The study focuses on the influence of aluminium titanium boron (A5TB) master alloy on the fatigue behaviour of 6063al alloy.
ABSTRACT Organic dye pollutants are sometimes released into the environment with wastewater from industries which make use of such dyes. In surface water, they contaminate the surrounding environment while their residue accumulates on land. These chemicals are noted for their toxicity to living organisms and they can cause cancers in human beings. In this study a relatively simple, long term and cost effective remedy for dye pollution reduction was developed; with a focus on the use of semico...
ABSTRACT The effect of constitutional liquation of strengthening particles in PM RR1000 superalloy in response to inerta friction welding process was investigated.
ABSTRACT The development of high strength materials, coupled with good formability has always been the aim of material scientists.
ABSTRACT In this work, the effect of various heat treatments on ST 60Mn steel on its fatigue strength prior to use and after use was studied it was observed that by normalising for service conditions not exceeding 10 stress cycle, the fatigue strength was raised by a factor of 1 2.
ABSTRACT This work investigated the possible use of Ushafa clay in Abuja, Nigeria as a suitable replacement for bentonite clay in foundry use. Moulding sand mixes with compositions of 8,10 and 13 % Ushafa clay, silica sand and 5, 7,8,9,10 and 11 % coal dust additives were mulled. From each mix, cylindrical specimens were prepared and subjected to permeability, shatter index, compression and shear strength tests. The results from the Ushafa mix were compared with results from Bentonite mixes....
ABSTRACT This work investigated the effect of annealing, normalizing and quenching heat treatments on the microstructure of some chromium alloyed grey cast iron. Three sets of ten samples each having chromium contents of 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5% were heat treated above the upper critical temperature, to austenitizing temperatures (800oC, 850oC, 900oC) for one hour each and then annealed, normalized and water quenched. Metallographic analyses of the heat treated samples were done. The results showed ...
ABSTRACT The effect of cement particle size of Portland cement on the properties of cement mortar and paste were investigated. This was done at a definite mix and water-cement ratio. Fresh clinkers collected from Dangote Cement Factory was ground together with 3% gypsum using disc grinder. The chemical compositions of the clinker and gypsum were determined using XRF. Five different sieve sizes comprising (212, 180, 90, 63, 45) m were used to characterize the cement sample finen...
ABSTRACT The corrosion rates of magnetized mild steel coupons in HCl solutions were studied using the weight loss method. The coupons were magnetized with a laboratory electromagnet at 0.38T, 0.57T, 0.76T, 0.95T and 1.51T and immersed in HCl solutions of pH ranging from 2 to 6. Experimental results showed that coupons magnetized at 0.76T, 0.57T and 0.38T exhibited higher corrosion rates than their non-magnetized counterparts at pH values less than 5. At pH 5 and above however, they showed...
ABSTRACT The effect of electrode types on the solidification cracking susceptibility of austenitic stainless steel weld metal was studied. The work also investigated the effect of electrode types on the strain hardening exponent of austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Manual metal arc welding method was used to produce the joints with the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding serving as the control. Tensile tests and metallography of the joints were carried out using standard techniqu...
ABSTRACT The inhibition of corrosion of mild steel by Azadirachta indica leaf extract in acidic environments of HCl and HNO3 from pH1 to pH6 has been investigated using the weight loss technique. The Azadirachta indica leaf extract is the inhibitor and the mild steel used was in the form of coupons. The investigations were carried out at ambient temperature. The optimum concentration of the extract used for the experimentation was obtained by soaking 200g of ground fresh Azadirachta indic...
