In-School Instructional Supervision Skills in Selected Public Primary Schools in Ndithini Division Masinga, Kenya

ABSTRACT

This study determined the effect of head teachers! instructional supervision skills on the performance of teachers in public primary schools in Ndithini division, Kenya. The research answered the following questions: What is the level of in-school instructional supervision skills on the performance of teachers in selected primary schools in Ndithini Division? What is the level of teachers’ performance in fulfillment of their pedagogical responsibilities as influenced by in-school instructional supervision in selected public primary schools in Ndithini Division? A survey design method was used to collect data for this study. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select six schools, and 30 teachers for the study. The six head teachers were purposively selected from the schools that were part of the study. The researcher used questionnaires and documentary analysis in this study to gather related data. The findings of the study were: Ndithini Division is dominated by male teachers and most of the teachers have been in the present school for more than five years. The study has also revealed that areas and activities done by Headteachers and teachers during ITS are in big deficiency. The way the Headteachers handle observational/supervisional steps is very much wanting. The research concluded that the quality of head teachers! instructional supervision skills was still a far cry. The researcher recommends the involvement of other school personnel in instructional supervision; a staff development program for each school be developed and instructional supervision to be made a day to day activity in all public primary schools in Ndithini Division.
