Influence Offacility Preparedness And Clients’ Readiness On Uptake Of Long-Term Acting Modern Family Planning Services Among Postpartum Women In Kagera Region; North-Western Tanzania

ABSTRACT 

Background: Family planning can avert nearly one-third of maternal deaths and 10% of child mortality when couples space their pregnancies more than two years apart. In Kagera Region the use of modern Postpartum Family Planning is uncommon. However, it is not known how much the facility preparedness and clients ‗readiness influence the uptake of Long-term ActingReversible Postpartum Family Planning [LAR PPFP]. Objective: To assess facility preparedness and clients‘ readiness on LAR PPFP servicesuptake among postpartum women in Kagera Region of Tanzania. Methods:A Cross-sectional study with quantitative approach was applied to obtain information from 343 pre-discharged postpartum women and 32 health facilities.A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and observational method were used for data collection. Data were analysed usingSPSS version 20. Percentages and mean were used to explain descriptive data, 95% CI was used to determine the associations betweenvariables. Results: All studied health facilities had more than 50% conduciveinfrastructure for LAR PPFP services provision, also commodities were available to all facilities by more than 75%. Postpartumimplant insertion services were done by 100% of the facilitiesand Postpartum Intra-Uterine Device insertion is just provided by 34.4% of the health facilities. 87.5% of the study respondents were not ready for the services uptake in Kagera Region. Despite that,47%, 50.4% and 53.9%were aware had adequate knowledge andpositive attitude respectively on PPFP services.
