INTITUTIONAL FACTORS AND GIRLS CHILD RETENTION (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KAMBUGA SUBCOUNTY RUKUNGIRI DISTRICT, WESTERN UGANDA).

ABSTRACT This qualitative and quantitative study investigated factors responsible for dropout of girls from secondary school in Kambuga sub-county Rukungiri District. The study was based on three objectives that are to find out how learning environment, teachers attitudes and effect of distance affects girls retention in secondary schools, The study employed cross-sectional survey with 50 respondents selected by purposive sampling and systematic sampling. The schools were randomly selected from others and respondents were randomly selected. Informants were purposively selected from Head Teachers, Teachers and students. Qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used, data were corded and entered using EPI-DATA and exported to SPSS for analysis. - ., About 6O% of Eespondents were female and 4O% respondents’ male. In conclusion there foLthe j5ilmary causes of~rls’ child ,dropout from secondary schools~ were r~äny and these include cultural factors family back ground learning ënvirohment teachers negative atti-tudes long distances from home to school etc. - The study there for recommeflds that stake holders should work hard to enlight th~ importance of girl child education to the parents. to provide school fees, scholastic materials and food ~to~thëir girls child to stay in school and school stake holders should provide conducive learni’ng envirnhmen~ that favors girls child life style.
