Personality Triats, Number Of Childern And Gender As Predictors Of Work-Family Conflict Among Nurses

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of work-family conflict among nurses in Nigeria. The

descriptive survey research method will be adopted for the study. A total of 200 respondents

were selected and used for the study using proportionate stratify sampling technique.

Questionnaires instrument on work-family conflict was developed by Carlson, Kacmar, and

Williams (2000) and revalidated by Amazue (2011) were used for data collection and they

include Work-family role conflict scale and organizational commitment scale. Linear

regression analysis and t-test were used to test the hypotheses. Finding of this study reveals

that there was a significant contribution of work-family role conflict to nurse’s commitment.

Also, it was found that a significant difference exists between married and single

respondents` experience of work-family role conflict. Moreover, the finding shows that there

was a significant difference between organizational commitment of male and female nurses

based on work-family role conflict. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended

that organizational support program needs to be introduced and provided for all levels of

workers in order to reduce the burden of work-family role conflict interface and virtually

induced commitment to their jobs. The level of family responsibilities of the workers needs to

be considered during recruitment, in assigning responsibilities and placement process in order

to foster Organizational commitment. Questionnaire instrument on big five personality traits

was used in this study and it was developed by john, Donahue and Kenti (1991). and it shows

in this study that personality traits is significantly correlated of all the types of work-family

conflict. (Time based, strain based, and behavioural based work-family conflict)
