CHAPTER ONE

1.1     INTRODUCTION

A political party is an organization which contest election in order to gain the control of government. It is an organized group of people who share similar political opinion, principles, interest and belief with the aim of gaining political power and governing the country. A political party is a form of political association, which seeks to control offices via election.

According to Rose (1999), political party is “an organization concerned with expression of popular preferences and contest the control of the chief policy making offices of government.

The importance of political parties in any polity cannot be over emphasized they provide the platform for recruiting public offices president, government, legislators, they also perform the role of “national integration”. Political party are very essential to democratically organized state, since election is an integral feature of democracy, political party is highly indispensable to the practice of democracy in many parts of the world today. This research will examine political parties and public orientation in Nigeria.
