Single Parenting and Adolescents Susceptibility to Antisocial Behaviour: A Case of United States International University- Africa Students

The purpose of the study was to establish if there was a relationship between single parenthood and adolescents’ susceptibility to antisocial behavior among USIU-A students. There were three objectives of the study: to examine gender differences in relation to adolescents susceptibility to antisocial behavior among USIU-Africa student from single parenthood; to find out if there was an association between adolescents from single parenthood and their academic performance; to establish whether there was an association between single parenting and adolescents susceptibility to antisocial behavior among USIU-Africa students. Descriptive and correlation research methods were used under the research methodology. Convenience sampling technique was used to select the participants. Attachment theory was the theoretical framework of the study. The study achieved a response rate of 60% participants. For data analysis, SPSS Version 25 was used. In the determination of gender differences in relation to susceptibility to antisocial behavior, the findings showed that the respondents had a mean score of 65.96 (SD = 19.51). However, t-test established that there were no statistically significant gender differences t(78) = 0.834, p = 0.41 between males and females. In determining if there was association between single parenting and academic performance the result indicated that all the respondents had a mean GPA of 3.25 (SD = 1.025).On the association of single parenting and academic performance, the finding indicated that that there was no statistically significant association X2 (4, N= 80) = 2.215, P = 0.696 between the adolescents’ single parenting family and academic performance. For association between single parenting and susceptibility to antisocial behavior, the result showed that there was no significant association between the two variables X2 (46, N = 80) = 48.254, P = 0.382. This study recommended that the university should periodically carry out awareness and sensitization forums to students on antisocial behavior and effective relationship between adolescents and their parents.
