Socio-Economic Status And Physical Violence In Families A Case Study Of Kawempe Division, Kampala District In Uganda

ABSTRACT 

The topic of the study was Socio-economic status and physical violence among families in Kawempe division, Kampala; the problem was rampant physical violence among families in Kawempe division, Kampala; the purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between socio-economic status and physical violence among families in Kawempe divisaion Kampala; the objectives of the study were; to find out the impact of income on physical violence among families in Kawempe divisaion Kampala, to assess the role of education on physical violence among families in Kawempe divisaion Kampala and to assess the impact of occupation on physical violence among families in Kawempe divisaion Kampala. The research used qualitative research paradigm which involved phenomenological design. The study employed purposive sampling technique to come up with sample, and used interview guides and focused group discussion in collecting data. According to the research findings there is a positive weak correlation between income, education and occupation of the people of Kawempe division and the physical violence of these people shown by the positive correlation which is small and is less than 0.5. It can be concluded that, in Kawempe division, the physical violence exhibited by individuals to smaller extent are a result of income earned by these people, their level of education and occupation of these people. This is because the overall coefficient of the correlation between these elements of socio-economic status is positive and very small. Therefore, there is a positive weak correlation between the socio-economic status and the practice of physical violence of people of Kawempe division, Kampala. The recommendation of the study is that, government should try to put measures to improve on the level of income of the people of Kawempe since income of people of Kawempe have had a positive correlation on the physical violence of the people in this division for example through doing business; also government should emphasize investment in education by the people of Kawempe division to help change the behavior of people in families, Additionally, government should encourage people in Kawempe division Kampala to have various occupations they practice and they should participate in business, agriculture and other occupations which will tend to improve the well being of the people in the division. There should also be emphasis on reduction of consumption of alcohol and other drugs since their consumption results into physical violence. This can be done through enforcing laws to reduce on the consumption of such drug
