ABSTRACT

The study aimed at examining the impacts of human resources management practices to private organizations with the following specific objectives: to study current human resource management practices, to assess the influence of human resource management practices on staff retention and to determine the measures that could be employed to deal with staff turnover in organizations. The Dodoma Municipality was used as a case study and it focused on ten selected private organizations. A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect primary data from 60 respondents. For primary data a questionnaire was developed to capture information from the respondents and generally the key methodology used was qualitative. The findings revealed the following: most of the employees  were aware of human resources management policies and practices; benefits of employees were well considered to some extent; employees in private sector organizations were  satisfied with staff development policies; training was very important to an organization; employees‘ problems should be solved to retain them in organization; there was fair treatment of employees; there was good and fair implementation of human resource management; and, that normally it is the working environment that forced workers to leave an organization. According to the findings, the researcher recommends that, in order for the private sector to avoid conflicts with employees and high turnover rate, the management of the organizations should: improve the working environment through considering benefits of employees; educating employees on the organization‘s human resource policies and practices; and, providing regular training to all employees on issues relating to their operations in order to improve the performance of the organizations and the welfare of the workers.
