Study On The Formulation Of Pantoprazole Microspheres And Tablets Using Mucuna Pruriens Starch

INTRODUCTION

In pharmaceutical sciences, microspheres have been extensively studied for use as drug delivery systems, where they have been shown to protect sensitive drugs from enzymatic degradation and allow controlled release, and tissue targeting of the formulated drug. Starch modification, can be used to tailor starch to specific applications. Pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor which suppresses the acid production by inhibiting the H+ K+ATPase. In this study, M. pruriens starch, a locally sourced excipient was used to formulate Pantoprazole microspheres and tablets. The microspheres were evaluated to ascertain the formulation with the best release in the intestine, since Pantoprazole is acid labile and can be degraded in the stomach. The entrapment efficiency, swelling property, particle size and the mucoadhensive properties of the microspheres were also determined. The tablets were characterised to ascertain the optimum tablet property using M. pruriens starch. Enteric coated tablets were formulated to bypass the GIT for optimum absorption of the drug in intestine
