Suitability Of Films In Enhancing Guidance And Counselling Services In Secondary Schools In Tanzania

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the suitability of films in enhancing guidance and counselling in Tanzania secondary school. The study had three objectives, which are to determine the informants’ understanding of films as a means for guidance and counselling services in secondary schools to identify the criteria to be considered in the selection of films for students’ guidance and counselling services, and finally to explore teachers’ steps to be considered during filming procedures for guidance and counseling sessions. The study used a qualitative research approach with multiple case studies as a research design. Purposive sampling techniques was employed to select 36 informants from 4 selected secondary school and one counsellor from UMATI. Qualitative research methods of data collection such as interviews, focus and group discussion were employed. The analysis revealed that most informants’ have an optimistic perspective that the use of films as the toals of guidance and counseling services delivering in secondary school will help in attaining the goals for establishing guidance and counseling services in secondary schools. Yet to achieve the effective use of films in guidance and counselling services the study findings pointed out that during films selection teachers should consider the age of the students, films content and language used in the films. The study recommends that the government has to integrated the use of films during guidance and counseling services through preparation and provision of suitable films for guidance and counselling services in secondary school. Furthermore, heads of secondary schools are urged to encourage the teacher counsellor to use films during guidance and counseling services. The study recomments further that, the use of film in guidance and counseling services, schools need to set up counselling clubs. Therefore, secondary school teachers are recommended to reorganise their general diary routine to allow the introduction of guidance and counseling clubs.
