ABSTRACT The study was aimed at investigating Teachers Absenteeism and performance of English language in rural secondary schools in Namayingo District. The research was based on three main objectives namely; establishing whether lack of instructional materials affect the performance of English in rural secondary schools, finding out how low motivation of teachers and students affect the performance of English in rural secondary schools and assessing whether lack of competent teachers affects the performance of English in rural secondary schools in Namayingo District. The researcher used descriptive survey design with both qualitative and. quantitative data management approaches. The research was based on a sample size of 67 respondents selected using the purposive sample and simple random sampling procedures from Namayingo secondary school teachers and students. The researcher used questionnaire and interviewing methods of data collection in generating the information. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS tool to for determining the reliability and data analysis. From the findings of the study, it was re~vealed by 89.6% that rural secondary schools lack instructional materials thus affecting the performance of students in English language. All the 100% respondents further disputed the view that audio visual aids are used in rural secondary schools during lessons. It was also confirmed that low motivation of teachers and students would affect the performance of students in English in secondary schools as 87.5% majority of the respondents revealed that teachers are paid early but little salaries. The research findings also reveal that more than a half of the respondents disputed the view that students have a good English background. It was revealed by 89.6% that teachers encourage learners to participate in class work. In conclusion, the research asserts the instructional materials are available in rural secondary schools but it’s not clear whether they are desired quality. The researcher further concluded that the background of the learners is worth dictating their performance. The researcher also concluded that the staff needs to be motivated with good salaries if any quality is to come out of them. The researcher therefore recommends that both the ministry, Education Office at the district and the school management should look into the matter of availing the relevant materials, motivating teachers and also recruiting competent teachers.
