The Effectiveness of Preventive Care for Malaria Projects in Tanzania: A Case of Ilala District in the Dar Es Salaam Region

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of preventive care for malaria projects in Ilala district in the Dar es Salaam region. The specific objectives were: to evaluate the effectiveness of Community sensitization in malaria prevention; to evaluate the effectiveness of mosquito net usage in malaria prevention; and to evaluate the effectiveness of insecticide in malaria prevention. A case study design, which involved the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection, was used to study a sample of 120 respondents from a study population of health staff and members of the local community of Ilala District. The study revealed that community sensitization was less effective on malaria prevention; regular mosquito net usage leads to effective prevention of malaria and spraying using insecticide was effective on malaria prevention. In order for preventive care for malaria projects in Tanzania to be more effective, the researcher recommends as follows; the need for the government to mobilize and empower communities to participate in health development and take responsibility for their own health rather than be reminded by community leaders; the need for the Government and Ministry of Health to ensure provision of affordable treated mosquito nets to each member in a household, including pregnant women at their first antenatal visit, children and old people; and the need of government and other stakeholders to enhance the distribution of free insecticide for mosquitoes.
