ABSTRACT This study investigated on the relationship between the institutional capacity building and NGOs sustainability. The major purpose was to find out how the capacity building could contribute to the process of establishing responsible, sustainable, skilled and trustworthy civil society organization supported by the community. Specifically the study aimed at examining the significance of capacity building on NGOs sustainability and analyzing the challenges which faced the NGOs and made them unsuccessful in their activities in order to forge the ways for building the capacity of Somali NGOs. The study was the first of its kind that was carried out in Mudug region and it was closely focused on how capacity building boosts the sustainability of the NGOs activities and it helped NGOs to understand deeply the weaknesses and threats and encourages them to benefit from their strength and opportunities in order to enhanced the relationship between the NGOs, beneficiaries and donors entirely as a benchmark for donor organizations for boosting and upgrading the skills of Somali NGOs. In terms of methodology, a comprehensive questionnaire and interview was conveniently and purposively administered to 50 respondents of sample size out of 105 population in 11 NGOs in Somalia (Mudug region) and the study found out the main capacity building indicators by analyzing the gaps in the information needs on a scale ranging from one to five. 1 = Capacity gap that needed immediate attention, 2= Needed additional attention, 3=Needed minor improvement, 4= No need for immediate improvement and 5 = There was no sufficient information to assess the capacity gap. The researcher, based on the literature reviewed and respondents’ suggestions, found that capacity building is the only solution for NGOs to be sustainable and effective/efficient in their activities, and the researcher recommended that NGOs to be given a full organizational knowledge and skills needed NGOs to be sustainable and these tools cover in seven Areas such as; Governance, Management practices, Human Resource Management, Financial resource management, service delivery, and External relations I partnerships hence forth affecting sustainability. This confirmed that most NGOs in Somalia fail because vi they don’t have enough experiences and capacity in launching humanitarian organizations as a result; they fail in applying the funds from donors lacking the capacity to write effective proposals. Even if they got the funds by chance they always failed in managing the fund properly and implementation of the project because of lack of capacity building. They also failed in reporting back to the donors financially and achievements also because of lack capacity building hence forth failing in sustaining the projects they have already got. All these findings bring us to the conclusion that they need thoroughly capacity building training in the fields of management, governance, human resource management, financial management, service delivery, external relations and sustainability.
