The Role Of Non – Financial Incentives On Retention Of Employees In Public Health Sector In Tanzania: A Case Of Dodoma Regional Refferal Hospital

ABSTRACT

Tanzania is among the developing countries which have been facing the challenges of retaining its health employees. The general objective of this study was to assess the role of Non Financial Incentives (NFIs) on the retention of public health sector employees taking Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital as a case study. The study employed a cross - sectional design in which a case study approach has been used. The study used three main tools of data collection; namely interviews, questionnaires as well as documentary review. The data analysis technique was done through the use of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS – Version 17). The major findings of the study included identification of the factors contributing to employee‟s retention. These were found to be the provision of NFIs like Training, Participatory Performance Appraisal, and Participating in Decision Concerning their Welfare, Timely Promotion, Housing and Supportive Working Environment. The findings provided support to the argument that in health organization where there provision of NFIs, most of its employees will be satisfied and retained for longer time in the organization. The study recommends that the Government and the hospital management should use the Non Financial Incentives as they have a strong reinforcement for the employee‟s retention, The Government should also increase hospital budget to retain employees as well as enough working facilities and material supplies. Hospital machines should also be serviced after every three months for an effective work environment for employees.
