WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2018: BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION

INTRODUCTION The  World  Environment  Day  is  a  day  set  aside  by  the  United  Nations  (UN)  set  aside  to encourage  worldwide  awareness  and  develop  actions/solutions  to  some  of  the  important global  environmental  issues  we  face.  It  is  celebrated  in  over  a  100  countries  and  has  been  a pivotal  platform  for  public  environmental  outreach  since  1974.  The  theme  of  this  year’s event  is  “BEAT  PLASTICS  POLLUTION”.    Plastics  pollution  is  one  of  the  biggest  environmental issues  we  face  globally  and  it  constitutes  a  global  challenge  that  requires  immediate attention.  Global  production  of  plastics  has  risen  from  1.5million  tonnes  per  year  in  1950  to 322million  tonnes  per  year  as  at  2015  (source:  UNEPA/European  Commission).  A  large percentage  of  plastic  produced  each  year  is  used  to  make  single-use,  disposable  packaging items  or  products  which  will  get  permanently  thrown  out  within  one  year.
