Abstract

This study is a survey of principals’ awareness of the policy directives on the implementation and structure of the new Senior Secondary Education Curriculum. A total of  hundred (100)school principals from hundred public and private senior secondary schools in the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja  were used for the study.  Principals’Awareness   of   the   Structure   and   Mode   of   Implementation   of   the   SSEC   Questionnaire   with reliability   coefficient   of   0.73  using  Cronbach   Alpha  was   used   for   data   collection.   Using weighted mean scores for data analysis, it was revealed that some principals lack awareness of the policy directives on the implementation and structure of the new Senior Secondary Education Curriculum.  The findings of the study revealed that there is no significant difference in urban and  rural  school  principals’  awareness  of  the  policy   directives   on   the   implementation   and structure of the new Senior Secondary Education Curriculum; it was therefore recommended among others  that  The Nigerian Educational Research and Development  Council (NERDC) should organize nationwide sensitization for principals who are still in the dark with regard to the contents, policy directives on the structure and mode of implementation of the SSEC and information about the new SSEC. This should be in the form of tapes, books and websites of NERDC for principals, teachers, students, parents and other stakeholders to access.
