Abstract This paper presented the assumption that parents' socio-economic status affects the

performance of students in secondary schools in county in The major objective of the

study was to assess the socio-economic statns of parents and the students' performance in

secondary schools Nyamitanga Division Mbarara Mnnicipality in Western region .

The literature review consisted of the relevant literature from the previous authors,

documentary reviews, journals and the internet literature. The literahire reflected on the

parents' socio-economic background and the students' performance.

The study used descriptive design in which the qualitative and quantitative methods were

used. The sample size was sixty respondents. The data instruments included the use of

Questionnaires, observation, and interviews.

The study findings show that the parents' socio-economic background influences the

students' academic performance. The study also indicated that other factors too

contributed the academic performance of students.

The recommendation was that the government should mobilize resources to facilitate the

students' welfare in the secondary schools so as to increase their academic performance.

The conclusion was that in order to harmonize students' performance, then the parents

socio-economic status should be uplifted. However it was noted that despite the parents'

socio-economic performance, other factors also had an impact on the students'

performance in secondary schools.
