ANTI-FUNGAL ACTIVITY AND MINERAL COMPOSITIONS OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF PLANTAIN (MUSA PARADISIACA)

ABSTRACT

Musa paradisiaca is mainly grown in the tropical and subtropical countries and widely used for its nutritional values all over the world. The fruit as well as the peels and leaves are used to treat different diseases in human in traditional medicine. This study presents the mineral compositions and antifungal activity of ethanol extract of Musa paradisiaca peel and leaf. The ethanol extracts showed antifungal action against : Candidia albicans (peel:15.67±0.58, leaf: 12.67±0.58) and Penicillum notatum (peel: 14.33±1.52, leaf: 10.67±1.52) . The study further showed the mineral compositions of ethanol extract as follows; Na (Peel: 162±1.35, leaf: 280.00±0.00), K (Peel: 235±1.54, Leaf: 40.00±0.00), Ca (Peel:100±0.95,leaf:155.00±0.00), Mg (Peel:76±0.55, leaf:18.00±0.00), P (Peel:360±165, leaf: 151.67±2.89) Fe (Peel: 5.65±0.6, leaf:14.00±0.00). The study reaveled the presence of the studied minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P and Fe) in plantain peel and leaf. The ethanol extract of the sample was active against the studied pathogens (Candidia albicans and Penicillum notatum).
