THE SCOURGE OF RAPE, A GLOBAL CONCERN

History has found the subject of a rape to be a recurrent phenomenon in all parts of the world, Nigeria inclusive. Often times it has come to stay a fact that women are perceived as weaker sex thus subjected to all sorts of unbelievable vices especially in Africa and Asia. This is informed by varying cultures which has brought about inequality and subjugation of the female folk. This subject has assumed a disturbing dimension that has become a global concern. The subjugation of women in the societies has resulted to all sorts of vices against women, including but not limited to rape, domestic violence and order sorts of sexual abuses. Rape from the historical point of view has proven to be a reoccurring phenomenon that has become isolated from other sexual violence against women in the society. The alarming increase in African societies in particular has placed victims in a very unjust position as despite the varied laws on the issue yet has no curbing effect on the matter. This is because victims are often blamed, stigmatized and humiliated for the crime committed against them. The object of this paper is to identify the discord in social medial view on rape and the relevance of the relevant laws.
