The focus of this study was to determine the reaction of teachers to English and Yoruba as instructional languages in selected primary school in Ife Central, Osun state. The study aimed at investigating the awareness nature of teachers about National language policy on education NPE and their reaction to languages stated as instructional languages and how the languages contribute to the comprehension of teachings by pupils.
The study was carried out through a questionnaire survey and participants’observation, where thequestionnaire asked the respondentssome open-ended questions regarding language use in the classroom, close-ended questions relating to NPE and the response of pupils to the language used in the classroom, and finally, asked the respondents to comment freely on what language they deemed fit as the language of instruction. The findings in this research are discussed in relation to the research questions. English language is used by the largest number of teachers in this study, yet when suggested by teachers on what instructional language is best, English and Yoruba languages were proposed by the highest number of teachers. With the major reason that the use of both languages will help pupils comprehend what they are taught in class, teachers view English and Yoruba as the best instructional languages.
