ABSTRACT
Background: Family planning utilization can significantly improve maternal health and reduce maternal mortality. Research have shown that women who have access to better family planning services are more likely to use contraception, are less likely to have unintended pregnancies, and thus have fewer abortions as well as promote gender equality, educational and economic empowerment for women. The objective of this study was to examine the barriers to family planning use among married women in the Ga West Municipality. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional study design with quantitative research tools. A multi stage sampling method was used to recruit 385 married women for the study. A structured questionnaire was designed and used to collect data from respondents. Data from administered questionnaire was analyzed using STATA version 14. Results: The study found that there is adequate knowledge of family planning among respondents. Majority (75.8%) have ever used family planning. However, current use of family planning was found to be low (17%). The age (p=0.001) and educational level (p=0.018) of respondents were significantly associated with ever use of family planning. Conclusion: Most of the married women have adequate knowledge on family planning. The commonly used family planning method is the calendar method which is less effective and unreliable. Husband’s disapproval is the major barrier to family planning acceptance and use by the married women.
