Challenges Facing Chile Headed Households In Rongo Division Ronco District Kenya

ABSTRACT

HIV!AIDs has claimed the lives of many adults and as a result, child headed household has

increased in number, in Kenya child headed households were first identified by the Kenya aids commission (UAC) in Awendo district (1996). Since that time NGOs’ have come in to support children like the ‘Christian organization.’

The main objective of this study was to find out challenges facing child headed house holds

among children between the age of 12-l7years who head families and the study continues to reveal that this has mainly been caused by HI V/AIDS, a situation in which parents have lost their lives. The data was collected using personal interview, participation, observation and questionnaires. The study further revealed that children are to grow up in families with their parents and the relatives but with death of parents and eroding capacity of the traditional extended family structures.The study revealed some of the challenges facing child headed households in Rongo Division and these include financial, social and psychological factors. The study further pointed out the significance of the research as being important for planners and policy makers to address and design programs to overcome the challenges.The study recommended to overcome the problems facing these children heading house holds in Rongo Division to the government, to the NGOs and CBOs to help these children organize for them funds to cater for their needs.
