ABSTRACT
In contemporary times, Africa has been witnessing variegated armed conflicts. The civilian population continues to bear the brunt of flagrant human rights violations occurring under the guise of the breakdown of law and order. All sorts of heinous crimes against humanity tend to become the permissible norm among armed groups. Gender-based violence among other human right abuses become prevalent; women and children are often the worst hit. This work analyses the experiences of women and children in conflict and post-conflict periods. It also proffers measures to tackle such violations. This study emphasizes the need for all parties to armed conflicts to respect international humanitarian laws in order to prevent the impunity of violence.
Keywords: gender-based violence, conflict, vulnerability.
