Design and Fabrication of journal Bearing Testing Rig

ABSTRACT

This project work deals with the design and fabrication of a suitable journal bearing test apparatus which can help in visualizing the behavior of journal bearing and its characteristics, and in determining the bearing parameters such as load bearing capacity, maximum oil film temperature, viscosity of lubricant, oil film pressure, and coefficient of friction based on experimental analysis. The work covers the design of a test apparatus which can be utilized to check the behavior of different materials as may be proposed when designing journal bearing. Journal bearing is a machine element which support another moving machine element (known as journal). It permits a relative motion between the contact surfaces of the members, while carrying the load. The study involves a theoretical aspect on the working principle of journal bearing, numerical calculations in which experimental results are compared with theoretical analytical results and a 3D model of the test apparatus. The components used in the fabrication of this test machine include; Journal bearing, Base plate ,Frame, Leveling pad, Weight holder, Copper tubes Oil tank, Electric Motor of 1400RPM, Plumber Blocks, Pipes, Weights, Bolts and Nuts, Control Circuit. The total cost of the apparatus was N125, 000. During the testing, experiments conducted showed that oil film temperature and pressure varies at varying loads hence fulfilling its purpose.
