ABSTRACT
Ehis study attempted to assess the effects of domestic violence on academic performance of a
~irl child in Busia Municipal Council — Eastern Division. Descriptive-explanatory design was
~mp1oyed using combined qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study found out that the
Tiajority of residents in Eastern Division had benefited from free education programme though
with some challenges; children who come from peaceful families performed better than the
}ildren who came from chaotic families; provision of the above materials have helped in
maintaining children in schools; domestic violence had indeed affected performance of girls in
schools, though there are other factors which also affect these girls academically; when some
girl’s performance deteriorates, they are counselled with senior women teachers. The study
found out that government education programmes which include universal primary education,
universal secondary education, universal post primary education and training had indeed
improved the academic performance of girls in schools. In a bid to ensure promotion of human
rights and prevention of domestic violence, the government must take effective steps to ensure
gender equality. There is therefore need to provide access to immediate means of redress to
victims of violence.
