EFFECTS OF PSYCHOSOCIAL EDUCATION ON STUDENTS’ ADJUSTMENT TO THE KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, KUMASI.

ABSTRACT The study was conducted in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to investigate the effects of psychosocial education on the adjustment of students to the university environment. The study was guided by four research questions and one hypothesis. The cross-section survey design was used for the study. A total of 257 respondents were selected for the study using a stratified sampling method. A self-developed questionnaire was used as the research instrument and data were analysed using frequencies and percentages. The hypothesis was tested by using the independent samples ttest. Using students’ involvement and attachment theories as the theoretical lens of the discussion, the finding of the study revealed attending study skills seminar and applying the suggestions made by professional counsellors help students to adjust positively to the university environment. Also, it became evident that the knowledge of students about campus security is greatly enhanced after receiving psychosocial education. It therefore positively affects their adjustment to the university environment. Moreover, it was established that psychosocial education helps students manage stress in a healthy way which in turn enhances their adjustment to the university environment. It was recommended that students should continue to avail themselves of study skills seminars organized in their schools by the Counselling Centre to learn more about study skills and that they should put into practice the suggestions and recommendations they receive from professional counsellors.
