Effects of Vocational Education on the Economy and Employment of Youths in Botswana

Abstract:

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of vocational education on the economy and employment of youths in Botswana. The importance of education and training for the improvement of local and national human capital cannot be underscored. A survey was conducted whereby a questionnaire was administered to 61 respondents. The researcher adopted a quantitative research methodology. The population of the study included all staff who worked in the Ministry of Education, Vocational colleges and Industry (employers of manufacturing concerns) at the time the study was conducted. The results of the study revealed that there was a positive relationship between vocational education, economic growth, and employment. The results further confirmed that vocational education was playing a significant role in fostering economic growth and employment for the youth. It was further discovered that there was a need to eradicate rampant unemployment through employment creation measures in order to stimulate economic growth in Botswana. The significance of this study was to unravel the effects of vocational education on the general economy and the employment of youths in Botswana given the fact that the country is bedevilled by high youth unemployment.
