ABSTRACT

Looking at its geographical location, Ghana which is an Anglophone country is surrounded by

francophone countries. This is a major factor for which great attention should be given to the

French language. In the framework of the sub-regional integration policy initiated by ECOWAS,

there is free movement of people and wealth from one country to the other. In view of that, we

assume that some key Ghanaian administrative sectors should have their personnel trained in

French for specific purpose. During our pre investigation in the health sector and precisely at

Dormaa-Ahenkro and Korle Bu hospital, it appeared that the health personnel were finding it

difficult to communicate with francophone patients who only speak French. This situation, in

some cases led to a bad health care service and a poor diagnosis. There is a high probability of

death due to the inability of the health personnel to understand what the patient is saying and to

speak to him. At the end of this work, we appeal to the stake holders of the Ghanaian health

sector to integrate the learning of French as part of the medical students training programme. It

can be at the early stage of the training or in a form of continuous training. This will enable the

health personnel to adequately take care of francophone patients who only speak French.
