DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A BATTERY/SUPERCAPACITOR HYBRID STORAGE SYSTEM FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY APPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT The development of any nation and its economy at large is centred on reliable and efficient power supply. Many developing nations are yet to actualise this feat, and therefore, there is need to strategize to meet the ever-rising demand for energy. Battery-based inverter systems have over the years provided additional power supply to critical loads, in the absence of public power supply. However, high peak charging/discharging power demands results in the degradation of the battery. A...

DESIGN AND OPERATION STRATEGY FOR A GRID-CONNECTED MICRO-GRID SYSTEM

ABSTRACT The economic growth of any country is hinged on reliable and efficient power supply. Many developing countries have not attained sufficiency in energy generation. Hence, there is a need to strategize to meet the ever-rising demand for energy. The micro-grid system can provide a way of escape from this problem as it harnesses the strengths and weaknesses of different energy sources to attain stability in energy provision. The overall aim of this research is the design and operation st...

A STUDY OF POWER FACTOR IMPACT ON ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS IN AJAOKUTA STEEL COMPANY LIMITED, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Power factor is related to power flow in electrical systems and measures how effective an electrical power system is used. In order to efficiently use a power system, the power factor should be as close to unity as possible. This implies that the flow of reactive power should be kept to a minimal. Maintaining a high power factor is crucial to obtaining the best possible economic advantage for both Utilities and Industrial users. Operating a power system at a low power factor is a con...

Analysis of Electrical Surges in Ajaokuta Power System Network, Nigeria

ABSTRACT The study investigates the electrical surge effects and remedy in Ajaokuta Power System Network located in Kogi State in the North Central of Nigeria, to identify various causes of lightning strokes and highlight various associated effects and to determine surge intensity and magnitude, collection of surge data on distribution and transmission network. The approaches adopted is to develop a preliminary data collection that will address the identified data gap and to review comprehens...

Fast Detection of Mobile Phones in the Examination Halls, Classroom and Dormitories of Yeji Senior High Technical School Using GSM Technology

Abstract  This work involves the design and development of a digital signal detector which is capable of detecting incoming and outgoing signals from mobile phones. The presence of an activated mobile phone can be detected by this handy, pocket-size mobile signal detector from a distance of one and a half meters, which could be used in preventing the use of mobile phones in examination halls, classrooms, confidential rooms etc. The circuit can detect the incoming and outgoing calls, tex...

EMOTION RECOGNITION FROM SPEECH: AN IMPLEMENTATION IN MATLAB

Abstract Human Computer Interaction now focuses more on being able to relate to human emotions. Recognizing human emotions from speech is an area that a lot of research is being done into with the rise of robots and Virtual reality. In this paper, emotion recognition from speech is done in MATLAB. Feature extraction is done based on the pitch and 13 MFCCs of the audio files. Two classification methods are used and compared to determine the one with the highest accuracy for the data set.

SMART SYSTEMS AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

Abstract Waste management is a raising concern faced by many nations in the world today. On the streets of major cities, it has become almost common to find waste which poses health hazards and other concerns to its communities and inhabitants. This project focuses on the use of smart systems and the Internet of Things (IOT), to provide an efficient and effective approach to waste management. This project designed and manufactured a prototype of a solar powered, self-compacting smart bin with...

ENERGY MONITORING FOR SMART HOMES USING INTERNET OF THINGS

Abstract The increasing demand for electricity in Ghana has led to concerns about energy conservation, to reduce the rising energy costs as well as the carbon emissions produced from energy generation. Popular energy conservation methods used in Ghana include turning off devices when not in use and using Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps in place of incandescent bulbs which consume more power. However, these methods do not have very significant results and are not very efficient. Additionally,...

A Generalised Model for Quantitative Evaluation of Reliability in Indices of the National Grid System

ABSTRACT Reliability indices are considered to be reasonable and logic way to judge the performance of an electric power system.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF SELF-RUNNING PULSE BATTERY CHARGER USING SOLID-STATE DEVICES

ABSTRACT  The self-running pulse charger was designed and constructed using solid-state devices to produce pulse current for charging lead acid batteries. The aim of this research is to reduce the use of kerosene lanterns by rural dwellers and aid pupils to study at night in off-grid communities which do not have electricity. A coil of 200 turns, MJ11016 FET, NE555 IC and various values of resistors, capacitors and diodes were soldered on a printed circuit board (PCB) to ensure proper e...

DESIGNING A LOW-COST SOLUTION FOR GUITARISTS IN GHANA WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO IMPORT EFFECT PEDALS

Abstract Music is a very important part of the Ghanaian society and it serves many purposes. In more recent times, the guitar has been one of the most widely used melodic instruments in music production. With the invention of the effect pedal, guitarists worldwide have been able to use a wider variety of tones to produce more complex and enjoyable music. In Ghana, however, these pedals need to be imported and this prevents a lot of guitarists from having a lot of tones to choose from which im...

AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE MANUAL COWPEA SORTING PROCESS

Abstract Cowpea traders find the manual sorting process of cowpeas laborious and time-consuming. Based on the volume of cowpeas and the proportion of damaged cowpeas, the process can span a time interval of about 6 hours. This project integrates the power of computer vision and convolutional neural networks to develop a solution for the cowpea trader to effectively segregate good cowpeas from the damaged ones.

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A SOLAR-POWERED ELECTRIC STOVE FOR RURAL AND URBAN COMMUNITIES

Abstract More than 2.2 million Ghanaian families in rural areas depend on firewood and charcoal as fuel for cooking [1]. This high dependency is taking a toll on forest resources due to rampant deforestation. “Ghana's forest cover, which stood at 8.2 million hectares in 1900, has now been reduced to about 1.2 million hectares, with an estimated loss of 65,000 hectares of forest annually” [2]. More so, Ghana has been facing energy challenges with the birth of frequent load-shedding, termed...

AFFORDABLE DIGITAL GUITAR EFFECTS PEDAL FOR LOCAL GUITARISTS

Abstract Music has been a mode of communication and a source of identity for many cultures, especially in Africa. The sound from the guitar is one of the many components that make up music, The electric guitar is a musical instrument, usually made up of six strings which is connected to amplifiers to produce sound. Technological advancement has led to the creation of Guitar effects pedals. However, manufacturers keep making new models of guitar effects pedals with a continuous increasse in co...
