Determination of Optimum Design Parameters of Non-linear Damped Outrigger System for High-rise Buildings

In addition to the inherent advantages of an outrigger system over conventional framed structural system, damped-outrigger systems (DOS) enhance it further with its agility to resist lateral loads in high-rise buildings. Dynamic response of slender and flexible buildings with DOS induces vibration control in which twisting of core structure is restricted by shear deformation of the damper present at the end of outrigger connected by perimeter columns. In this paper, a 300 m tall core-tube typ...

Kinetics of Lead Adsorption by Activated Rice Husk Ash

ABSTRACT  The need to clean-up heavy metals that contaminate water cannot be over emphasized. This paper examined the kinetics of lead adsorption using activated rice husk ash. The influences of contact time, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature on adsorption were investigated. From the results obtained, by analyzing the effect of contact time, it was discovered that maximum adsorption of about 90 % removal efficiency took 240 minutes using 0.2g of adsorbent. While in testing for the effect of...

Development and Performance Evaluation of a Double-Rotor Self-Action Cassava Grater

ABSTRACT The modification of a single-rotor cassava grater was undertaken. The singlerotor grater was modified into a double-rotor self-action grater and its performances evaluated by determining its throughput capacity and efficiency. The throughput capacity was determined by grating known quantities of cassava roots in three respective runs and the time taken to grate them measured from a stop watch. The efficiency of the machine was calculated from the quantity of roots grated and quantit...

Energy and Exergy Analysis of Boiler Systems

ABSTRACT  In this work, the results of the analysis of the NBC boiler plant using energetic and exergetic methods are presented. The main aim of this study is to investigate the effects of boiler rotary burner cup speed, oil nozzle size, excess air and fuel types on its performance and emissions with a view to identifying and quantifying components having greatest losses of energy and exergy efficiencies. Optimization of the boiler operating system is also carried out. The specific objective...

Finite Strip Analysis of Continuous Thin-Walled Box Girder Bridges

ABSTRACT  Thin-walled box girder bridges are very efficient structural solution for long-span bridges because of their high torsional resistance, stability, economy, and aesthetic appearance. Though, this type of bridge is not common in Nigeria, it is envisaged that they may offer economic advantages in future high way projects in Nigeria. Analytically, however, the box girder bridge is a very complex indeterminate problem. Therefore, the primary objective of this research was to produce a r...

Derivation of the Bandwidth Resource Allocation in an ATM Based Network

ABSTRACT  Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology is the transfer mode for implementing a Broadband-Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). ATM defines multiplexing and switching techniques for broadband signals. Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) is employed in the B-ISDN backbone. The main objective of an ATM is to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) in transfer of cell streams across networks. This technology recommended as the transport vehicle for the B-ISDN offers a great fle...

Exergetic Efficiency of Passive Solar Air Heater with Phase Change Energy Storage Material

ABSTRACT  Energy and exergy analysis of solar air heater with phase change material energy storage is considered in this research work. Energy and exergy models for component systems like flat plate solar collector and phase change material in one-dimensional heat conduction in a cylindrical pipe, for storing periods were obtained. Exergy analysis, which is based on the second law of thermodynamics, and energy analysis, which is based on first law, was applied to improve system efficiency. M...

A Pulse Width Modulated Voltage-Fed Inverter Vector-Controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive

ABSTRACT  A Pulsewidth Modulated Voltage-Fed Inverter Vector-Controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Drive based on Hysteresis Current Control (HCC) is presented in this work. A detailed conceptual dq modelling of the PMSM was undertaken in the rotor reference 26 frame for open loop studies, thereby setting the pace for the variable speed drive (VSD) of the PMSM which, inherently, is not capable of variable speed operation. Subsequently, vector control by Field Orientation Contr...

Appraisal of Construction Management Practice in Nigeria

ABSTRACT  Construction industry has complexity in it nature because it contains large number of parties such as clients, consultants and contractors. The factors that influence construction management practice differ from country to country, due to prevailing conditions. The objective of this project is to identify factors that influence construction management practice in Nigeria construction industry and elicit perceptions/ranking of the severity using relative importance index of the vari...

Bioremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soil using Selected Organic Wastes

ABSTRACT Contamination of existing and potential agricultural lands is a major problem associated with the processing and distribution of crude and refined petroleum products in many oil producing countries like Nigeria. Hydrocarbon contaminants in soil are potentially phytotoxic to plants and interfere with plant establishment and growth as well as other land uses. The problems of pollution have led to the exploration of many remedial approaches to effect the clean-up of the polluted soils....

Fracture Mechanics of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester Composites (Gfrp) Subjected to Impact Load

ABSTRACT Glass mat reinforcement, which can be easily shattered, is widely used across the world in military, automobile, civil, railway and electronic engineering among others. This research investigated the fracture mechanics of reinforced polyester composites on exposure to sudden impact force, using experimental and analytical methods based on impact and Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) test procedures, to study the stress distribution around crack tip and zone. Plies of randomly...

Design and build an electric car charger station with a renewable source of energy at IUK

Abstract Construction and use of electric cars have increased dramatically in recent years. It's totally silent, productive, wasteful to a minimum, and needs zero care. Although electric vehicles might help cut down on carbon dioxide emissions, the charging stations required to keep their batteries at an adequate level would put a significant strain on the country's electrical grid. Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, have the potential to lessen the burden on the power system. Ass...

The Quantification of the Influence of Rain Attenuation on Received Power at Ka Band

ABSTRACT  The quality of satellite communication link can be seriously affected by variable climatic phenomena such as rain, gases, and scintillation. As the frequency of operation increases 8 beyond 10GHz, the effect of rain becomes very severe with the growing need for high bandwidth frequencies such as frequencies in the Ku-band and Ka- band hence the need for better fade mitigation becomes necessary. In order to identify the appropriate rain fade mitigation technique, there is need to qu...
