Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Students Education In Selected secondary school Of Riana Zone Homa Bay District, Kenya.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the Impact Of HIV/AIDS On Students

Education in Selected Secondary School Of Riana Zone Homa Bay District,

KenyaSpecific objectives of the study were to: Determine the impact of HIV/AIDS on the

enrolment and attendance a/learners in Selected Secondary School of Riana Zone Homa

Bay District, Kenya. Investigate the Psychological effects of HIV/AIDS on students in

Selected Secondmy School of Riana Zone Homa Bay District, Kenya and Determine the

Effects of' H!VIA!DS on the quality of education in Selected Secondmy School of Riana

Zone Homa Bay District, Kenya. The methods used for data collection were

questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the pupils and focus group discussions

with the community members. The findings revealed by4 I% of the respondents that

HIV/AIDS has decreased the demand for education, 46% of the respondents strong~y

agreed that Few learners are enrolling due to HIV/AIDS related poverty, 42% of the

respondents strongly agreed that attendance of learners is low due to HIV/ AIDS, 49% of

the respondents strongly agreed that Learners are dropping out due to HIV/ AIDS, 42% of

the respondents slronglv ogreed that attendance o/learners is low due lo HIV'A!D5i. 40%

of the respondents strongly agreed that HJVIAJDS has led to anger in children and 41%

of the respondents strongly agreed that infected children are discriminated against and

42% ol the respondents strongly agreed that HIV/AIDS has affected the quality of

education, 33% of the respondents strongly agreed that Teachers are scarce due to

HIVIAJDS The study recommended that: Basing on the.findings schools should educate

people about HIV/AIDS to avoid any form of discrimination that makes people with

HIV/AJDS feel less valued Government should allocate funds that help victims of

HIV/AIDS including treatment and orphans due to HIV/AIDS who cannot afford to pay

for school .fees. Counseling services should be availed in schools to help teachers and learners who have heen afTecred by Hl~~1AJDS in any way.
