Land in Uganda is the most important natural resource. Had the British not colonized Uganda may be the Ugandan land administration policy would be different and issues of land evictions would not have been an issue. The 1900 Buganda Agreement had far future resounding impacts that continue to be felt till now. Land evictions being one of those. The agreement disposed the lay people off their land who became squatters in their own land. The land Act of 1998 as amended whereas it introduced the aspect of Tenants by occupancy, it was not absolute in protecting these tenants who continued to face evictions each and every day. The Government policies among other reasons have also greatly contributed to evictions.
The constitution (land Evictions) practice directions of 2021 meant to streamline the process of land evictions and demolitions. Amidst the application of these law with continuous rise in evictions the president issued directives in a letter dated 28th/FEB/2022, titled support towards ongoing efforts against illegal land evictions and transactions which in effect contradicted the practice directives and seemingly removed power from Courts And placed with the security organs.
With these conflicting jurisprudence, questions are only raised on how the ordinary Ugandan Is protected from land evictions.
