ABSTRACT
In Kenya 60% of the total population either own a mobile phone or use
telecommunication services on a daily basis. Currently, there are three service providers
in the country namely, Safaricom, Celtel and Telkom Kenya. The publication is tested on
a mobile commerce initiative by Safaricom Kenya. The initiative is called M-pesa and it
allows mobile users to transfer money from one person to the other, using mobile phones
and cellular technology as the operating infrastructure.
The report specifically looks why more and more Kenyans are opting to use M-pesa to
send money and even pay their bills, other than using banking services to do the same.
The research identifies the effect of mobile commerce on the people of Kenya especially
in both the rural and urban settings in Kenya.
The publication identifies why M-pesa service is a key factor towards Safaricom
competitive advantage, and why the company has maintained its customer loyalty.
The primary data is collected through the use of questionnaires. The data is then analyzed
and results together with their interpretations are then provided.
The research is conducted in Nairobi the capital city of Kenya, where Safaricom limited
is located. The research especially through questionnaires is conducted in the rural areas
of Kenya such as Kerugoya, Kisumu and Narok.
