PATIENT AND PROVIDER RELATED FACTORS INFLUENCING UTILIZATION OF COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES (A CASE STUDY OF ABEOKUTA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT)

ABSTRACT

This study investigate patient and provider related factors influencing utilization of community mental health facilities.

There seem to be higher use of private health facilities. This could be attributed mostly to issues of easy access, shorter waiting time, longer or flexible opening hours, better availability of staff and drugs, better attitude, and more confidentiality in socially stigmatized diseases. The utilization of private hospital was affected by the household size, the distance of available hospital from home and the total cost of seeking health service. However, in private hospitals, the quality of services, the responsiveness and discipline of the provider has been questionable.

This study was carried out by administering questionnaires to the two target groups. In all the study surveyed two hundred and seventy (270) people parents.

The findings of the study indicates that public health facilities are playing a significant role in the delivery of mental health services to a large segment of the population in Ogun state. it contributes to our understanding of potentially important explanatory variables which need to be considered in the planning and implementing of mental health care in the society.

The study helps us to understand the medical needs of the rural dwellers and thus to provide better mental health care. Rational planning and allocation of resources require an understanding of the effects of different factors on the choice of site of care to allow a closer match in future between provision and need.

Among others the study recommended the government should provide basic infrastructures such as accessible roads, stable power supply, steady water supply or good source of water and functional ambulances to aid utilization of these facilities, mental health care providers should improve on the quality of their services to encourage utilization of the facilities. Periodic evaluation of the quality of care provided by the health facilities should be conducted where clients of the facility are asked to rate the quality of care.
