ABSTRACT The importance of the direct object complement pronouns in both oral and written communication cannot be underestimated. It avoids repetitions thus, making the communication nice. For instance, « Oui, je le connais » as a response to the question « Tu connais ce garçon ? » instead of repeating the direct object complement as in « Oui, je connais ce garçon ». However, pronominalising the direct object complement in French remains a difficulty for quite a good number of Ghanaian learners of French in our tertiary and second cycle institutions. This study examined the mastery of Akan learners of French at the SHS level in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis with regard to the pronominalisation of the direct object complement in the 3rd persons singular and plural. The methodology used involved learners writing a grammar test on the pronominalisation of the said complement, and both learners and their teachers responding to separate questionnaires. Errors committed by learners in the test were analysed using Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis. The study found out that identifying the appropriate direct object complement pronoun to use, the agreement in gender and number in pronominalising the direct object complement, among others, are some of learners’ difficulties in pronominalising the direct object complement. It is expected that the findings and recommendations of our study will help to reduce learners’ errors with regard to pronominalising the direct object complement at the SHS level and thus, improve both written and oral communication in French at both the second cycle and tertiary levels of education in Ghana
