TEACHERS’ COMMITMENT AS DETERMINANTS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN AWKA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE

This study investigated the teachers’ commitment as determinants of secondary school students academic achievement in Awka South LGA of Anambra State. The design adopted for this study was descriptive survey design. The population of the study consisted of 950 secondary school teachers in the 18 secondary school in Awka South LGA, Anambra State. The sample for the study comprises of 150 selected teachers from the 950 population in the 18 secondary schools in Awka South LGA, Anambra State. The research instrument was questionnaire designed by the researcher and validated by three experts. The data collected were analyzed using mean. The findings of the study revealed that teachers motivate students with a high task performance, attain to students individual learning difficulties, inform the parents/guardian about their children academic progress and most times attain remedial studies on students area of learning difficulties. Also, this study shows that teachers’ personality influence the academic achievement of secondary school students to a very high extent. Also, the study found that teachers’ recognition for a job well done, giving incentives and rewards by the school management and including teachers in the decision making of the school system boosts the level of commitment of the teachers to duty. Based on these findings, the study recommended among other things that teachers should attend seminars, workshops and conferences in order to acquire more knowledge and skills to improve their pedagogy in the classroom. And teachers tend to impact more knowledge when the school management motivates them with incentives and rewards for a job well done
