THE AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BIOLOGY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS





ABSTRACT





This study

was carried out to verify the Availability and utilization of instructional

materials in teaching Biology in senior secondary schools in Ekiti-State .The

major objective was to elicit the availability, utilization improvisation of

instructional materials, its effects on students and the problems facing the

teaching of Biology.





One hundred

students and twenty teachers were used. These were selected from five secondary

schools. Data were analyzed. It was discussed with the use of simple percentage

counts.





The

result showed that there are qualified teachers in senior secondary schools but

not enough. Few instructional materials are available in schools, Biology teacher

uses relevant instructional materials but not all Biology teachers use them in

their teaching. It improves student performance and not all teachers improvise

them .





       Based

on the findings, it is recommended that,





1.Qualified Biology teacher should be employed and

they should not combine the teaching of the subject with the teaching of

another subject.





 2.Government

should supply schools with Biology instructional materials while schools should

also play their own parts.





3.Teacher should be encouraged to make use of the

instructional materials in their teachings and endeavor to improvise for those

that are not available .
