BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The world is increasingly becoming more and more complex on daily basis. A person needs to behave in competent ways if he or she is to maximise the opportunities that come his or her way. There are different dimensions of competence and each individual manifests in different ways. For instance, academic competence may involve the mastery of some learning tasks while behavioural competence may take the form of maintaining control over external events. Social competence, which deals with social effectiveness, has been of interest to some researchers for some time now. Scott (2005) asserted that emerging theories of youth development such as resiliency, self-efficacy and risk/protective factors have stressed social competence as an important dimension of successful adolescent development. Social competence may help adolescents to confront several developmental tasks that confront them (Omoegun, 2001).
