ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to establish the impact of domestic violence on family

relationships and development. It was guided the following objectives that included 1) to identify

the different forms of domestic violence existing among families in our community 2) to identify

the causes of domestic violence among families and 3) to examine the impact of domestic

violence on family relationship and development .The study employed a descriptive survey

design in its methodology and a sample size of 80 respondents participated in the study. From

the study findings, it was revealed that Emotional violence as the leading form of domestic

violence in families, Honor killings and acid throwing were among the forms of domestic

violence. Jealousy was the leading factor for domestic violence. Other causes included; Mental

illness, Termination of the Relationship and socioeconomic status. Child abuse was reported to

be leading impact of domestic violence; substance abuse and Poverty marital conflict were the

other effects. The study recommended that Education outreach should becoming major parts of

establishing a more effective program for preventing domestic violence at home. Reduction in

the supply of drugs. Drug abuse solutions can be viewed from many perspectives. On a national

level, solutions are based and discussed in terms of the reduction in supply of drugs. From a

social perspective, solutions are usually discussed in terms of prevention, early intervention and

treatment, Sensitization. Prevention is better than cure. This adage holds good in fighting

domestic violence too. Public education campaigns and stricter laws regarding domestic violence

are measures that can adopted. Many areas have created coalitions of community and business

leaders to address the problem of domestic violence, dealing with peer pressure. The biggest

reason for domestic violence is because their friends utilize peer pressure. No one likes to be left

out, and teens and some adults, too find themselves doing things they normally wouldn’t do, just

to fit in.
