ABSTRACT

Solid waste management is increasingly becoming a great concern to most urban centers of most developing world including Soroti. The uncollected waste from households, manufacturing (plastic and metal), agriculture products, institutions (health and education) center, and market places, others are scattered in open spaces, along the roads, water sources and drainage systems. This report is from the study about solid waste management from the household level in central division of Soroti. The study put emphasis on the methods, causes impacts and possible solutions to in efficient solid waste mali age men t. These study has mainly employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection 20 respondents were sampled from the central division six informants were also interviewed. The analysis of the findings was performed using SPSS package. The findings revealed that most of waste generated is biodegradable composed mainly of food related waste, resulting in to big volumes of central waste. The study found that most respondents stored refuse in plastic bags and some had none or no permanent facilities. The study also established that a good number of the community use illegal methods of disposal. These include dumping in open spaces, along the road and water resources. Among the causes of poor solid waste disposal identified were lack of funds, inadequate facilities, and in accessibility particularly in unplanned settlements, accompanied with poverty and distance to the disposal sites. Improper disposal and management has led into unhealthy environment, re-occurring of communicable diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, malaria, typhoid and dysentery. The communities have suggested the following solutions, financial capability to facilitate working tools and community sensitization. Likewise, improvement of informal settlement was noted as key to proper SWM in the study area.
