The Influence of Language on Regional Integration: Case Study – Kiswahili Language and East African Community

Abstract:

This study looked at the influence of Kiswahili Language on EAC integration focusing on trade relations, political mobilization and participation, and communication and cooperation. Chapter one gave an introduction of the problems of lack of a common language in a region and how it affects the main objectives of EAC. Chapter two gave a detailed literature on the regionalism and regional integration and how the two bring states with a common goal, in this case East African Community. The study mentioned broadly the theoretical aspect of trade relations, political participation, mobilization, communication and cooperation, stakeholder participation as strongly emphasized in functionalism and constructivism theories. Chapter three explains analyzed data used to clarify further the importance of using Kiswahili language on EAC integration. Chapter four and five highlighted the findings of this entire study and the gaps that were filled by those findings. The recommendations and areas of research were made also in line with the findings of the study, which help address is the influence of Kiswahili language on EAC integration.
