The Prospects And Challenges of Maintenance in Onne-Port Operations

 ABSTACT

This research assesses the challenges and prospects of maintenance in Onne ports operations. Data were obtained from eighty maintenance staff in Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) and Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT) using questionnaire. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample used for this research. The Yaro Yamen formula was employed to determine the sample size. Data were converted from ordinal scale to interval scale and three hypotheses were tested with the aid of econometric software called E-view version 3.1.From the results obtained, there is a significant relationship between port maintenance and funding of maintenance. This was because the calculated t-value of 12.02 is greater than the table value of 2.13. In addition, further test shows that there is significant relationship between port maintenance and well-trained maintenance staff. This was arrived at because the f-statistic of 94.44 exceeded the table value of 10.1. Poor funding and lack of training of maintenance staff are the major challenges facing ports in the country. It is therefore recommended among others that funding of port maintenance should be increased and that maintenance staff should be well trained. Keywords: Port, Maintenance management, Inf
