ABSTRACT 

English language being a universal language has attained its place in every aspect of life and 

education sector is no exception. Inclusion of English language as a compulsory subject in 

School Education vividly illustrate the importance of the English language for man which will 

later enable them to cope with life challenges. This study focused on investigating the 

effectiveness of phonic and syllabic method to teach English language to Junior High School 

Students and to explore the impact of the phonic and syllabic method on developing reading, 

writing, listening or speaking skills of the Pupil of Kronum M/A JHS. The researcher put the 

work into five chapters with each chapter related to the other. Chapter one mainly deals with 

the introduction which covers areas such as background to the study, statement of the problem, 

research questions and significance of the study, delimitation, limitation and finally 

organization of the study. Chapter two deals with the literature review. This chapter provides 

support for concepts and skills of English Language, the theories of language acquisition, 

phonic methods and syllabic methods that has employed aimed at overcoming the difficulties 

pupils face in pronunciation, speaking and spelling of words. Chapter three is about 

methodology. It describes population and sample selection, development of research 

instrument, data collection procedure and analysis plan. Chapter four deals with results finding 

and discussion of results whereas chapter five deals with summary, conclusion, suggestion for 

further research, recommendation and referencing
